Public Meeting: Neponset River Bank Testing, Hyde Park, Mon., Dec. 10, 6PM

The MA Dept. of Environmental Protection and the MA Dept. of Conservation
and Recreation will hold a public meeting to discuss a program to sample
soil along the banks of the Neponset River in Milton and Boston, this
December. In the 1960s, river-bottom sediments of the Neponset River were
dredged and deposited along the riverbanks. Because PCB contamination has
been found in the Lower Neponset River, testing will be done on the old
dredge spoils on the riverbanks. PCBs are now a known carcinogen. They
were commonly used in transformers and other electric components beginning
in the 1930s until they were banned in the late 1970s. Meeting location:
Menino Hall, Hyde Park Library, 35 Hyde Park Ave., Hyde Park. The meeting
will run from 6-7:30PM. Questions are encouraged.

Please Note: There are No PCBs located along the paved path of the
Neponset River Greenway, and there will be No testing done for PCBs there.
Unfortunately, in the previous version of this event listing the DEP press
release was misinterpreted to read that there were PCBs along the bike
path. My apologies for any confusion this error may have caused.
