Save the Harbor/ Save the Bay and the Boston Foundation
Announce the Better Beaches Grant Program

Today, Save the Harbor/Save the Bay announced their Better Beaches Grant
Program designed to jumpstart activity on Massachusetts public beaches
from Nahant to Hull. The program is made possible by a generous grant from
The Boston Foundation, announced at a public meeting of the Metropolitan
Beaches Commission in October.

Paul Grogan, President and CEO of The Boston Foundation, expects to see
exciting results as a consequence of the program’s specific focus. "These
beaches represent an enormous opportunity for all Bostonians and regional
residents alike. We are delighted to be able to support Save the Harbor/
Save the Bay and the work of the Metropolitan Beaches Commission.”

Proposed programs could include but are not limited to swimming lessons,
outdoor concerts, kite festivals, sand castle competitions, or farmers’
markets. Request can range from $500 to $5,000. Non-profit organizations,
community groups, and less formal “friends” or neighborhood groups from
Lynn, Nahant, Revere, Winthrop, East Boston, South Boston, Dorchester,
Quincy, and Hull are eligible for funding. “The two page application is
simple and can be found online at www.savetheharbor.org,” said Colby
Morrissey of Save the Harbor/ Save the Bay.

“At Save the Harbor/Save the Bay, we believe that the best way to save the
harbor is to share it,” said Patricia Foley, President of Save the Harbor.
“We are looking for great new ways to share these important resources with
the public.”

In addition to grants, Save the Harbor/Save the Bay is also offering
technical and operating assistance for friends groups looking for ways to
improve their beach.

Save the Harbor/ Save the Bay will host an application workshop on
Thursday January 10 from 5:30-6:30 at their office, 212 Northern Avenue
Suite 304W Boston, MA. (Please RSVP if you wish to attend). The
application process will remain open until February 1, 2008 with funding
decisions made by the end of February. For additional information please
visit www.savetheharbor.org or contact Colby Morrissey at (617) 451-2860.
